Cover Picture January 2021

Of course for everyone first and foremost a safe, healthy and prosperous 2021!

For who’s interested in Film Simulation and Lut’s, be sure to scroll down and read the maybe interesting information for you at the end of this blog.

And what about the picture ?

Well, taken with an Olympus OM-D-E-M10 first generation, and an Olympus OM Zuiko 300mm f4.5.
Taken from hand, no tripod!
Mini Review :
For someone who is looking for a very portable camera, with as many options as possible, this camera can be a winner.
Every disadvantage has its advantage, said Johan Cruyf, one of the most important football players in the Netherlands at one point in time, and although photography has nothing to do with football, that statement is justified here.
This Olympus has a 4/3 or Four Third sensor, and although this can be seen as a disadvantage, and partly it is, the advantage here is in a larger crop factor, more specifically x2.
In almost every branch of photography where weight and compactness is an asset, the larger crop factor is a game chager.
The focal length of each lens is doubled !
The lens I used above is not a lightweight but it is super compact, combined with the crop factor x2 I have a lens available with a whopping 600mm in 35mm equivalent.
Add to this the IBIS of this small camera, and you can easily take pictures by hand. The perfect combination for nature/bird photography – and all this in a camera that you can find on the second-hand market for around € 150.

Pro’s :

  • Portability
  • IBIS !
  • Crop factor x2
  • Wifi
  • Touch screen
  • Highly compatible thru adapter
  • Availability of many high quality lenses : Zuiko OM
  • Cheap to get

Con’s :

  • 4/3 sensor

New information about upcoming articles :

Next article will be about cleaning your camera sensor with the VSGO APS-C sensor cleaning kit.

Next, I never stopped after the first steps in creating Fujifilm simulations, in fact, I even started from scratch, again.
This resulted in a brand new massive collection of Fujifilm Luts, over 125MB !!! and I’m still at it.
This greatly improved versions will be called the PictureFX Fujifilm Professional series.
I will spread this collection over a few weeks.
But the interesting part :
For many makers of Luts, the background of the development is usually a secret, especially when it comes to analog film simulations.
This time it will be different.
I also plan to publish all the data – the “Holy Grail” where many photographers like to get there hands on – presets, settings, curves, mixer settings and so on. The differences between Luts and Presets, why it might be better to use Presets under certain circumstances. While all of this is being explained and written down, I’ll also be explaining how to use RawTherapee to create your own Lut’s. So, I think it will be an interesting new beginning of the year, stay tuned !

A few years back I got a message on my PC : "The box said 'Required Windows 11 or better'. So, I installed Linux Kubuntu 20.04 LTS" :-) - My Photography software : RawTherapee, Darktable, Digikam, Luminance HDR, Hugin, Gimp and many other. Oh yes, the email address is still there, but I'm not a Pentaxian anymore - now i'am proud to be a Fujiian !

  1. Marc. Once my “Resources” page for simulations and photography is up and running, your collection will have a permanent slot there. I’m the mean time, I’ll share your posts to the simulation groups, add I know we all really appreciate them.
